Signature-based AV software is definitely failing - the bad guys keep things changing too fast for signatures to keep up - but behavior-based (pseudo-AI) AV is making strides in closing the gap. I feel your pain, man, but I'm not ready to completely abandon AV quite yet. Malware Bytes has been good for detecting some minor stuff and PUP's. Whole process take about an hour (which is about what it takes to scan and clean an infected PC). If I happen to get an infection, I simply restore from the backup after re-imaging the machine. I lobbied hard to get rid of SEP when I started here but management didn't want to incur the costs of switching so I just got used to it and slowly learned to hate it less and less. I was aware of SEP's reputation and had used older version in the past and knew first hand how awful they were. At first it was against my will because that's what we had when I started at my current job. I have been an SEP user for over 10 years though.
