Ultimately, the principle of defense in depth still applies. There will always be a need for clean up software, for example. I don't think we'll ever see the day when there is zero need for AV software.

Signature-based AV software is definitely failing - the bad guys keep things changing too fast for signatures to keep up - but behavior-based (pseudo-AI) AV is making strides in closing the gap. I feel your pain, man, but I'm not ready to completely abandon AV quite yet. Malware Bytes has been good for detecting some minor stuff and PUP's. Whole process take about an hour (which is about what it takes to scan and clean an infected PC). If I happen to get an infection, I simply restore from the backup after re-imaging the machine. Servers and desktops are backed up daily. I have decided that it was easier to expand our backup storage and employ Veeam endpoint backup. I have abandoned AV all together in most instances.

Much in the AV world has changed and many products are becoming more and more resource intensive. I rank it right behind McAffee, and to me, they are dead last.

I've seen our company-wide infection rate plummet. Especially the cloud-management for our multiple locations and roaming staff. I've been using Symantec.Cloud for a few years now and love it. It's much less resource intensive than in the past and gets good ratings (for whatever those are worth.better than bad ratings that are meaningless, I suppose). 12.x was a quantum leap from 11 and we've just moved up to 14 and have been well pleased so far. I agree with others here who feel the product has improved greatly in the past few years. We've got the full-blown enterprise edition that has the centralized management server and that makes a huge difference. Judged on that basis, I'd say SEP is as good as it gets. I just view them as a necessary evil and I just want them to do their job and not cause me any problems. I can't say I love it either but then I can't say that about any AV product. I lobbied hard to get rid of SEP when I started here but management didn't want to incur the costs of switching so I just got used to it and slowly learned to hate it less and less. I was aware of SEP's reputation and had used older version in the past and knew first hand how awful they were. At first it was against my will because that's what we had when I started at my current job. I have been an SEP user for over 10 years though.

I have used Malwarebytes' free edition to scrub infected machines but have never used the real-time protection features. Run 'em both and disable one if you bump into trouble. Now our phones have multi-core processors.ĭifferent AV products have different strengths so I agree with the I've always heard that you shouldn't run two AV programs at once thatīoth have real-time components but I think that line of thinking wasīorn in the days before the lowest end computers had multi-core CPU's.
